One Child's Village is proud to join over 300 other charities as an official member of the Imagine Canada Ethical Code Program. The program's objective is to assist organizations with accountable fundraising. OCV takes its donors very seriously. We encourage responsible fundraising, and ensure that funds are put towards valuable projects. One way we maximize our donors' dollars is by ensuring that the organization is 100% volunteer based. No one (even the Executives) is paid for any work they do with OCV.

Snorine
Snorine
(March2010)

Last March we wrote to you about a young student from Kawangware school. Snorine had strep throat which turned into a serious bout of rheumatic fever. Snorine had no permanent home in the slum, and no family to take care of her. Poverty prevented her from being able to pay for treatment. When we heard about Snorine’s condition, we immediately began fundraising. Thanks to donations from people like you, we were able to cover part of her medical expenses. Friends of Mercy Children Centre were able to cover the rest of her treatment, which included hospitalization and medication. Unfortunately, shortly upon being released from hospital, Snorine’s health took a turn for the worse. She was readmitted to the hospital; however, the damage from the rheumatic fever was too great. It is with a heavy heart that we must say that Snorine passed away on May 7. Friends and community members were able to provide her with a funeral service.

We are very saddened by Snorine's passing. It’s hard for us to imagine that someone could die from a lack of medical care that we take for granted. We cannot help but wonder what might have happened if Snorine had been able to receive proper care sooner. We have learned a grave lesson through Snorine's passing and are reminded of how delayed access to proper treatment can be a matter of life and death. One Child's Village has created an emergency health fund for Mercy Children Centre. In the future, if a student needs immediate medical attention, there will be money on hand to pay for it. We can only go forward and live with our mixed feelings of regret and hope: regret thatayoungstudent with great potential had her life taken by poverty, and hope Donate Nowthat because of this new emergency fund, future young lives will be saved. If you are interested in contributing to the students' health care, click on the Donate Now button and select "Health Fund" when making your online donation.

We have been busy with different fundraising efforts since our annual fundraiser last spring. Here's what we accomplished with your help!

Garage Sale Galore
This spring and summer several OCV members from Edmonton and Ottawa held yard sales and raised close to $3000! Here's how it worked out for Dianne Stewart in Edmonton:
Garage sale galore!

I was inspired to do a fundraiser for One Child's Village by Todd, his example of a generous, giving life and his words: “When I'm on my death bed, I'm going to care less about how much stuff I have than how many people I helped." Last spring I decided a good way to raise money for One Child's Village was to have a garage sale.

I contacted almost everyone I know and my daughters did the same. Many people seemed happy to contribute their used kids toys, books, furniture, electronics, sports equipment, and much more. We had the sale on a Friday to Sunday. There were lots of bargains and we had fun doing it. Also, most importantly, we raised almost $1700.

Some items that didn't sell, I put on Kijiji. If they were listed as "free", I asked if they would like to make a donation. Most people seemed really happy to support the cause. And it was a really positive experience for my family and me.

I would certainly consider doing something like this again. I think it would be ideal if others got involved. It would work out great if several agreed to have a sale, recruiting stuff from all their network of friends and acquaintances. Many people seem happy to donate. Here is my email address so that anyone interested could contact me and we can share ideas: d.k.stewart@shaw.ca

Howard Rent-a-Car Fundraiser
On May 26, over fifty people came together at a local pub in Ottawa to hear a little band with a big heart! Howard Rent-a-Car provided an evening full of fun for all with their folky stylings. They graciously donated all proceeds to One Child's Village, raising just about $350!

On Raffles and Tournaments

Here's a story by Kristina Zwart on how she managed to raise $2500 with a little help from her friends...

I’ve always wanted to go to Africa and spend some time volunteering with those less fortunate than myself, do it through an organization that I know had the children's well-being at the top of their priority list and – most importantly --  share this experience with someone that I’ve got the utmost love and respect for. This is why, after attending the One Child’s Village silent auction last April with my friend Kamal, we decided it was time. Volunteering at Mercy Children Centre through One Child’s Village with my best friend, it’s as though it was meant to be!

Once we decided that we were going, for how long and when, we realized that we wanted to make the most of the opportunity. Time for some fundraising! After a little brainstorming we came up with two fundraising events: A charity poker tournament and a raffle. Having no fundraising experience whatsoever between the two of us, we had no idea where to start. We started questioning whether or not we could pull either event off. The first event to get underway was the raffle. Getting the raffle license was the least of our worries. How were we going to get enough prizes to make people even want to buy our tickets!? Thanks to the support of some great friends, the prizes started rolling in. By the time we were ready to start selling raffle tickets we had about $2000 worth of prizes, 20 prizes to draw for.

Next on the agenda was the poker tournament. At first people were a little hesitant to play, but once they found out what they were supporting they were excited that they were able to support a great cause, while enjoying a Friday night of cards, pizza and beer. Intuit was gracious enough to open the beer fridge to the players, and Panago even donated 10 large pizzas to feed the players. This event felt more like organizing a small party then trying to raise money. We were able to raise $850 while having a good time - and we’ve been asked to host another one before we leave. Doesn’t sound like a bad idea!

Although another of our ideas (a bottle drive) didn’t turn out quite as planned, there are a lot of generous people out there who were determined to participate even though we weren’t making it our focus, giving us another $400 or so.

With the help of so many generous people we were able to raise $2500, which we plan to double by submitting through Intuit’s donation matching program. Talk about a great place to work. Thanks to everyone who helped us reach our goal of raising $5000 to take to Bumala with us in February!

A BIG thank you to everyone who made it out to a yard sale, bought a raffle ticket, or simply dropped by to hear the stylings of Howard Rent-a-Car. We are touched by the creativity, involvement, and generosity of our supporters!

Annual General Meeting

One Child's Village held its AGM on Monday, August 6, 2010 at 6:00pm. The OCV Board is changing! We are indebted to Gloria Pasmeny for her 3 years of service as a board member of OCV. Her experience and integrity brought welcomed structure in the early years of the organization. She is now moving on to greener pastures and we wish her success. We know that everything you touch will turn to gold Gloria! Kathy Zwart, our newest board member, has been deeply involved with OCV for the past two years as a Volunteer Coordinator. We are very excited about our continued collaboration. Welcome aboard Kathy!

ACGC Picture Change Photo Contest
The Alberta Council for Global Cooperation challenged citizens to take part in the Picture Change Photo Contest. Photos depicting international development and cooperation were voted on by the public. Three photos from Bumala, Kenya were selected for the ACGC 2011 Calendar!

Verge Magazine Photo Contest
OCV won the 2009 Traveller's Choice Award in Verge Magazine. The photo is of 18-year-old Solomon who was born without arms in the Kawangware slum of Nairobi, Kenya. His triumph over adversity embodies the spirit of persistence, optimism and hope as he struggles to earn a living in his underprivileged and unforgiving home in Africa. Solomon spends his days sewing intricate beadwork jewellery, and thanks God every day for the opportunity to bring joy to those who are moved by his art.

NHPC Opening

The same award winning photo from Verge Magazine was framed and presented to Colleen MacDougall, Executive Director of the Natural Health Practitioners of Canada, at their Grand Opening on September 16, 2010.
They wished to have this image framed as a reminder to their staff and guests of the tremendous challenges that others face in the world and how they, like Solomon, have overcome those challenges.
